Oxton 2's suffer opening day defeat
By Oxton Admin
Oxton 2nd XI started the 2018 campaign with a home fixture against Urmston CC.
Thanks to the tireless efforts and amazing job of Chris Price to even get a game on after the ground had been under water the previous week, the weather held off on the day and after losing the toss, Urmston unsurprisingly put Oxton into bat.
The opening partnership of Chris Cashin and Tom Green was broken in the 7th over with 'Bean' (6) caught when the ball stopped on him and the same outcome two overs later for Green who was also dismissed caught to head back to the shed (7).
Kumar moved the total along with stand in 3rd XI skipper Colin Clayton with a 20 partnership following the loss of the captain (guilty of not getting forward) being bowled.
Kumar saw his timbers tumble for (21) before the home side lost two more wickets in quick succession with Tom Roden and 'Rhino Fairclough' failing to score.
Colin Clayton having been caught (19) then left Oxton 61-7 and with 'Macca' also failing to score (LBW), it was down to Liam Tollady (8) and Sanjeev Rath (14) to add the final runs for a first innings total of 95 all out at tea.
In response, Urmston's opening pair were gifted their runs with each finishing 53 not out and 41 not out respectively with some extras giving the visitors an easy victory without losing a wicket.
Oxton did not show any backbone in what was a very poor and disappointing bowling performance with Alex McIntosh being the pick of the bowling attack the only highlight. This and the lack of runs on the board to defend a total will be vital to improve in the next 2 consecutive away games to Cheadle CC and Bowden CC and with lack of availability, all players will need to dig in to get some points on the board.
L.Tollady - 5-0-20-0
J.Fairclough - 3-1-13-0
S.Rath - 2-0-22-0
S.Williams - 3-0-22-0
A.Mcintosh - 3-1-15-0
T.Green - 0.2-0-4-0
Thanks to Stuart Hirst (Umpire) and Meg Cureton (Scorer) for a multi coloured, nicely presented scorebook.
