Oxton Win the Play-Off
By Richard Fennah
Sunday 3rd XI to play in the CCCL Sunday Premier Division for the first time in 2018
With heavy rain forecast, winning the toss was not much of an issue, however, we won the toss and chose to bowl.
Our pace bowling attack of Dhruv, Ed, Callum and Steve were not as accurate as they usually are but we managed to get the first wicket as an LBW with only mid off appealing! As luck would have it a straight drive by the opener hit the non striker's stumps but the runner was out his crease. Steve ran back took the stump out with the ball - run out!!!
After the drinks break, with score on 91/2 after 20 overs, the spin Luke and Mike got into the act and ripped through the line up. Mike got 3 and Luke 4 giving away only 36 runs in the next 18.3 overs. Toft's innings was interrupted at 128/9 in 38.3 overs as rain promptly came in. Tea was taken early but to no avail as the outfield became too wet for any further play.
The umpires decided it was time for a bowl out! Rain stopped, it all started off. Five bowlers with 2 balls each alternating teams. Indoor Cricket demon Geoff had hit the stumps in all his warm up bowling but missed both his chances - later comparing his failure to football teams that always win after missing the first penalty! Jack hit one and missed the other. Enter Luke to bowl his seamers, hitting base of middle stick twice !!!Tom who had been hitting g the wickets in warm up, missed his two. In all this time, Toft managed only one wicket! So they had to get both wickets in the last two attempts but missed.
Oxton therefore won the play-off fixture and will enter the Cheshire County League Sunday Premier Division for 2018. This will be Oxton's first appearance in the league since transferring from the Liverpool Competition in 2010.
