Hi everyone!
My name is Allyson Byrne. Some of you may already know me as cricketer in the
women’s team here at Oxton or indeed more recently as part of the tennis section.
Many moons ago I was captain of the then Lancashire/Cheshire combined county
side. This has led me to be part of the live commentary team at Lancashire for
some of the women’s games. As you can probably tell that despite all my efforts to
retire from cricket I keep finding myself being drawn back into it in various guises.
In 2023 I became involved with a fabulous charity called Cricket without
Boundaries. This volunteer organisation has established links in Uganda, Rwanda,
Kenya and more recently Nepal. Their aim is to promote cricket in local
communities - usually where cricket has not been seen before. The coaches
working in tandem with local teachers and coaches (often already having been
trained up by the visiting UK coaches) visit schools and colleges delivery super fun
coaching sessions often in tandem delivering social inclusion programmes on
themes such as gender inclusion, HIV awareness and prevention of domestic
violence.
I visited Rwanda in 2023 and was part of a team that delivered sessions to approximately 6000 youngsters in 11 days of coaching---manic to be honest but worth every aching muscle and sore throat.
We are all self-funded and in addition we must fund the costs of the project itself;
equipment, hiring of facilities, internal flights, payment to local coaches and drivers, etc.
I am off for a second trip to Nepal in November and am looking to raise some funds.

As part of this fundraising, I am doing a sponsored walk up Moel Famau -in full
cricket kit pads, helmet and all. This will take place in July and of course I’ll be
posting some further photos to keep you all up to date. If you want a peek at some
of the project blogs, take a browse at the CWB website with everything you need
to know about this amazing charity which recognises the positive effects
involvement in sport (especially cricket) can truly have on the well-being of young
people wherever they may be. We know that already, don’t we?

If you could contribute in any small way with a donation, I will be forever grateful.
